Dickie's Digest - Choices, Speed, Intention, Effort, and Writing Habits
Five weekly links that are actually worth your time to explore.
Hey my friends, happy Sunday.
One quick thing from me this week:
There are five days left to enroll in the next Ship 30 for 30 cohort. We’ve completely revamped the community and curriculum for this cohort, and we couldn’t more excited about it. If you’re looking to start writing online, we’d love to have you join the 241 others already enrolled.
That’s it from me! In this week’s Digest:
📖😰 The Choice-Minimal Lifestyle: 6 Formulas for More Output and Less Overwhelm.
📓⌛️ Speed Matters: Why Working Quickly Is More Important Than It Seems
🎧 ⬆ Greg McKeown, Author of Effortless on the Tim Ferris Show.
🧵✍🏼 Five Threads to Bookmark if You Want to Build a Daily Writing Habit
📖😰 The Choice-Minimal Lifestyle: 6 Formulas for More Output and Less Overwhelm. This week I went down the rabbit hole of some of Tim Ferriss’ blog posts from before 2010. And I came away saying that for the next few weeks, I’m only going to read and listen to things that are at least five years old. This “Lindy” internet content diet is something I’m looking forward to trying. This post breaks down 6 actionable rules and frameworks you can use to start making fewer decisions, preserving as many precious units of attention as possible. As someone who spends over an hour deciding which restaurant to go to, I plan on implementing these ASAP.
📓⌛️ Speed Matters: Why Working Quickly Is More Important Than It Seems. This week I revisited one of my favorite blog posts. Reading this essay transformed the way I think about work and time. The obvious benefit of working quickly is that you’ll finish more stuff per unit time. But there’s more to it than that. If you work quickly, the cost of doing something new will seem lower in your mind; it’ll have lower activation energy. Part of the activation energy required to start any task comes from the picture you get in your head when you imagine doing it. It may not be that going for a run is actually costly; but if it feels costly, if the picture in your head looks like a slog, then you will need a bigger expenditure of will to lace up.
🎧 ⬆ Greg McKeown, Author of Effortless on the Tim Ferris Show. This podcast episode resonated more heavily than any episode I’ve listened to in the past few months. I’ve been thinking a lot about productivity through the lens of intention and effort. And the premise of Greg McKeown’s books Essentialism and Effortless speak to both of these. The idea is simple: what if the important things you’re working on weren’t as difficult as you’re making them? How can you first choose the right things to work on, and then make working on them enjoyable? Those are the two questions I’m thinking about after listening to this one - I highly recommend it.
🎧✍🏼 Wren Radio: My go-to writing playlist. Last week many of you loved the Magic State Flow Playlist I linked to, so this week I thought I’d plug my go-to writing playlist. I found this one with a totally under-used Spotify hack. When you come across a song that really gets you in a good place, simply click “Go to song radio” and bookmark that playlist. Boom - you have an entire playlist of songs similar to that one.
🧵✍🏼 Five threads to bookmark if you want to build a daily writing habit. This week I curated my five most popular threads on building and fostering a daily writing habit. And with five days left to enroll in the May 10th Ship 30 for 30 cohort, it’s a sneak peek at some of the principles we’ll teach to the ~400+ members who are already signed up. If you’re looking to start writing online but don’t know where to start, read through these threads. I think you’ll find them valuable.
🔥 Last week’s most popular link: How to Become Insanely Well-Connected.
If you're looking for a Sunday rabbit hole, look no further than these replies.
That’s it for this week. As always, I appreciate your time and attention. Shoot anything you find interesting this week my way.
Have an epic week.
