Dickie's Digest - Helping Others, 1729, Influence, VeeFriends, and DeFi
Five weekly links that are actually worth your time to read.
Hey my friends, happy Sunday.
We’re five weeks into the new, streamlined Digest format. Hit reply and let me know what you think. And as always, send anything you find especially interesting my way. I read every reply.
In this week’s Digest:
🎧 🧠 Robert Cialdini, author of Influence and Pre-suasion on the Sean Delaney Podcast
🎧 🎨 Gary Vee’s new NFT Project: VeeFriends on the Modern Finance podcast
🧵 💵 How to DeFi: Learn how to join the Decentralized Finance revolution
📖 🙏🏼 A simple, life-changing framework: help this person. This week I asked my Twitter followers to link to their favorite blog post older than 2015. I had seen most of the responses, but this one caught my eye, and I’m glad it did. It’s a 250-word post on a simple mantra you can let guide your daily interactions with others: “help this person.” Approach the stressed-out barista, the struggling subordinate, and even those you find undeserving with the “help this person” mantra and watch how your interactions change.
🎧 💵 Balaji Srinivasan on the My First Million Podcast. This is the sixth or seventh podcast I’ve listened to with Balaji, but I think it might be my favorite so far. Sam and Shaan did an excellent job digging into a few things that most people overlook when talking to Balaji: how he actually spends his time (and his advice for how to spend your time in your 20s). There’s also a hearty dose of crypto, media, Balaji’s new project oneseventwonine.com, and much more. Move this one up your list if you haven’t already heard it.
🎧 🧠 Robert Cialdini, author of Influence and Pre-suasion on the Sean Delaney Podcast. One thing I’ve started doing is, before reading a book, listening to the author on one or two podcasts (since they usually share the ideas they think are most important). And there are few books that have sat atop my “to read” list longer than Influence by Robert Cialdini. After listening, this conversation sealed the deal on making it the next book I’m diving into. There are more practical tips on influence in persuasion in this podcast than I could possibly keep up with.
🎧 🎨 Gary Vee’s new NFT Project: VeeFriends on the Modern Finance podcast. First of all, if you’re not subscribed to Kevin Rose’s new Modern Finance podcast, you’re missing out. This one was a deep dive into Gary Vaynerchuk’s new NFT project VeeFriends. I have to say, it’s a pretty damn cool project. Gary minted 10,255 NFTs, each of which guarantees entry into the next three VeeCons, his post-COVID conference series. But each token also comes with a perk of some kind, either a gift or some kind of access to Gary. There’s everything from mystery boxes to a day of fishing to a 5v5 basketball game inside MSG. This is the first NFT project I’ve seen built with the consumer, not the creator, in mind, so I’m excited to see where it goes.
🧵 💵 How to DeFi: Learn how to join the Decentralized Finance revolution. I work full-time in traditional financial services, but I’m fascinated by the world of Web 3.0 and crypto. To better understand the Decentralized Finance (DeFi) ecosystem, my friend Jack Butcher recommended this resource. I’m about halfway through, and it’s truly one of those zero-to-one books that change the way I see the world. I’m not sold on it 100% just yet, but they make compelling, first-principles-based arguments for where the future of money is heading (and how to get in out in front of it).

Another excellent example of constraints unlocking creativity.
That’s it for this week. As always, I appreciate your time and attention. Shoot anything you find interesting this week my way.
Have an epic week.
