Dickie’s Digest — Fishing, Morning Brew, and Profiles
Hey there! Happy Sunday.
I spent the weekend moving out of my NYC apartment after two solid years. It was surprisingly much easier than I had planned thanks to Clutter and Handy who did most of the work.
In this week’s Digest we have:
My latest article on Planning versus Action
An interview with the founders of Morning Brew
A tweet thread that should cost hundreds
Let’s get to it.
Have an epic week!
Dickie
Grab a Shitty Rod and Start Fishing — Few things flood my brain with dopamine more than planning. My brain basks in this planning process because it feels so productive, but involves minimal mental effort.
The antidote? When I find myself gathering gear, I grab a shitty rod and start fishing.
In my latest essay, I wrote about planning versus action. It’s a personal reminder to spend less time planning and more time taking action. You can check it out here along with my other essays at dickiebush.com/essays.
The North Star Podcast with Morning Brew Co-Founders Austin Rief and Alex Lieberman — I’ve been reading Morning Brew every day for three years. It’s a daily business newsletter that recaps the most important business news in a casual and witty format. Alex and Austin have executed tremendously in the last three years, rapidly iterating and scaling their company. This podcast takes a deep dive into Morning Brew’s origin story, how they set goals inside the company, the strategies they used to scale Morning Brew, and the role they see themselves playing in the future of media. It’s quite the lesson in business and brand strategy — check it out.
This tweet thread should not be free — Polina Marinova writes one of my favorite weekly newsletters, The Profile. Every week she aggregates a list of the best personal profiles written across the internet, from Elon Musk to Joe Rogan to Daniel Ek. This tweet thread is an absolute gold mine. You can find profiles to read of the big players in just about every industry.
This format shows the power of tweet threads. Nowhere else on the web can you aggregate years of work into one spot. Check it out and let me know if you find anything epic.
"But perfect freedom is not found without some rules. People, especially young people, think that freedom is to do just what they want, that in Zen there is no need for rules. But it is absolutely necessary for us to have some rules. But this does not mean always to be under control. As long as you have rules, you have a chance for freedom."
From Zen Mind, Beginner’s Mind. Very similar to Parkinson’s Law and Discipline Equals Freedom. Resurfaced with Readwise — if you aren’t using Readwise, you are missing out.
Who knew that stoplights were this big?
Thanks for reading!
