Dickie's Digest - Tame Impala, Twitter Gold, and Single-Ply
Friends,
It’s a great feeling to sit down and write on the Sunday of a long weekend. These “Synthetic Saturdays” pack all the great parts of Saturdays (no responsibilities today or tomorrow) and Sundays (the NFL) into a single day without any of the normal Sunday Scaries. What’s even better is that this is the first of eight Synthetic Saturdays this year. MLK Day, President’s Day, Memorial Day, the 4th of July, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Christmas, and New Year’s Day all fall on either Fridays or Mondays this year. Long weekends once every five or so weeks? I’ll take it.
Thanks to those of you who signed up over the past few days — here’s this week edition of the Digest. Enjoy!
What I’m Listening To
This Is Tame Impala, a playlist by Spotify
A kaleidoscopic journey from Kevin Parker’s bedroom to the world stage - these are the majestic sounds of Tame Impala.
Before this week, I had never heard of Tame Impala. But after seeing he was the headliner for Governor’s Ball this summer in NYC, I had to check him out.
Truly some of the more beautiful sounds I’ve heard in a while— great for background music while working or lowkey weekend mornings. This song in particular damn near brings a tear to my eye.
#72 Neil Pasricha: Happy Habits - The Knowledge Project | Podcast on Spotify
I particularly enjoyed this episode of The Knowledge Project featuring Neil Pasricha. Neil has the kind of positivity and energy that just leaves you feeling good when the episode is over.
Neil’s definition of happiness really resonated with me. “Happiness is the joy you feel when when moving towards your potential.”
There are some other good tidbits on morning routines, happiness habits, and resilience. Check it out this week if you have the time.
What I’m Reading
James Clear (@JamesClear) on Twitter
@JamesClear — author of Atomic Habits (one of my favorite books of 2019) — has a Twitter account full of gold. Scrolling through it for a few minutes provides more insights than most books provide.
Where Are You Still Using Single-Ply? – The Blog of Author Tim Ferriss
This article by Tim Ferriss asks some introspective questions regarding how, where, and why we spend our money the way we do. He specifically prompts the reader to ask themselves — Where am I still using single-ply?
Many of our spending habits were ingrained in us at a young age or at a time when we had fewer resources. If left unchecked, you could find yourself in Tim’s scenario of using single-ply as a 41-year-old millionaire.
Of my many takeaways, one was that I was still using the same crappy pillow I’ve been using since my freshman year of college. I upgraded to this one and it’s been a game changer.
Lines I’m Hammering
49ers -7.5, Chiefs -7. Mahomes vs. Garoppolo in Miami. Book it.
